Until recently, BlobSeer used a static replication factor associated with stored data for fault tolerance purposes. Users were able to set this factor when writing new data into the system, but this couldn't be changed later to reflect the run-time environment. Recent work addressed this issue by allowing a dynamic increase of the replication factor, for some data incurring increased accesses, as detected in real-time by a monitoring framework.
The goal of this project is to enhance the existing data replication module , by adding the facility of adaptively decreasing the replication factor. The decision to contract the number of replicas relies on real-time monitoring of the system with MonALISA. Thus, the adaptive replication module will be able to maintain, increase as well as decrease the number of replicas.
